The Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia Questionnaire (EdFED-Q) is a valid and reliable observational instrument that nurses can use to assess difficulties and determine the amount of assistance a patient with dementia will need to have sufficient nutrition and hydration. During this video, viewers will observe the feeding problems in a hospitalized patient with dementia, as well as observe the interview of a family member to gather insight on unique behaviors that may take place during meals. Following the assessment, the nurse and nursing students work with other disciplines to develop a plan that can be implemented during hospitalization to provide for the nutrition needs of the patient, and then transitioned to the home setting.
