Parents need better visual information, tools, to give children accurate doses of medicine. Picture-based instructions and measuring tools that closely match prescribed drug doses reduce pediatric liquid medication errors by parents, report researchers in the July Pediatrics. Among 491 parents with children ages eight years or younger, 84% made at least one error, and 12% of the errors were overdoses. More errors were made with tools labeled “mL/tsp” versus “mL” alone, and fewer errors happened when the dosing tool capacity matched the dose volume. Fewer errors also occurred when labels contained both text and pictograms.
