Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, February 17, 2005, a photograph.

Mary Rafferty Gerstein is a freelance photographer based in Chicago, IL.

About this photograph, Gerstein says, “This picture was taken while I was working on a series of documentary photographs on nurses. The two-week-old infant, Lauren Brooke Klainos, had had open heart surgery at two days old to correct a ventricular septal defect and coarctation of the aorta, and was recovering in the Cardiovascular–Thoracic Surgery Division of the hospital. As Lorri Nielsen, MSN, RN, CPNP, PCCNP, spoke soothingly and checked her incision, I was amazed to see Lauren respond, looking at Lorri and focusing on her face.”
