The ability of nurses to practice in more than one state is often limited by burdensome procedures in applying for licensure in the new state. Multistate licensure has also been a concern for nurses working in the area of telehealth, where communication with patients may cross state lines. Some states have, or are considering, laws that permit a nurse residing in one state to practice in other states that participate in a multistate licensure agreement. When AJN asked the state (or district) bodies that handle licensure to supply information, we also included two questions on multistate licensure legislation. Seventeen states now have multistate licensure laws, but only two more have such legislation pending. This chart shows the specific answers of those who responded to the questions.
