“One Empty Seat,” a poem.

Ray Bingham is a technical writer and editor for the National Institute of Nursing Research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. This is his first published poem. His essays have appeared in numerous publications, including AJN, Health Affairs, and the Washington Post.

Bingham wrote this poem shortly after one of his dogs died suddenly of cancer. He says, “On our late evening walks, Zoe would often startle at ghosts and apparitions in the dark that I could never see. In her remembrance, I thought I would write about the ghost I did see.” Contact author:
