Advances in Neonatal Care. 18(1):70-78, February 2018
Overview of a quality improvement project conducted at UMass Memorial, Worcester MA, to simplify the Finnegan scoring tool for neonatal nurses charged with assessing withdrawal in newborn infants exposed to opioids during pregnancy. Training program that incorporated education, a restructured Finnegan Scoring Tool and a Bedside Guidance Tool resulted in improved consistency of withdrawal scores among 179 neonatal nurses. Despite improvement, more objective and simplified scoring tools are still warranted.
