This video introduces Guest Editor, Tamara Meeker, CRNP, highlighting the Special Surgical Series for Advances in Neonatal Care. This special series concentrates on surgical diagnoses and surgical procedures affecting the neonate while in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The articles include esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula, congenital infantile fibrosarcoma, risk of abdominal compartment syndrome in the neonate, VP shunt for intraventricular hemorrhage, and telemedicine for the complex surgical patient. Each article includes pathophysiology and the need for astute assessment in preventing further morbidity or mortality as well as nursing’s role in caring for these critical neonates.
