INTRODUCTION: From health promotion strategies, it is proposed to direct effective actions that involve all population groups, in particular those that by their conduct increase the risk factors related to sedentary activities. Therefore, it is proposed for young people to improve sedentary behavior by increasing the level of physical activity by increasing energy expenditure ranging from 200-400 minutes of moderate activity combined with vigorous activity 2-3 days per week during confinement periods.
PURPOSE OR OBJECTIVE: to describe the behavior of physical activity during periods of confinement by Covid-19 in young people from Chía Cundinamarca-Colombia.
METHODOLOGY: a descriptive study was implemented which used the self-managed questionnaire Youth Activity Profile (YAP), carried out during the period of confinement at home by Covid-19. 262 people between 12-17 years (47%Female-53%Male) participated in the survey. At the same time, the register of anthropometric variables such as: Body Mass Index (BMI), weight (kg), size (m) and primary variables were included. Physical activity behavior and sedentary behaviour of young people during the virtual school day were also analysed.
RESULTS: the results report that weekend physical activity is negatively correlated with weight (r:-0.1805;p:0.0337), BMI (r:-0.1862;p:0.0272) and sedentary habits (r:-0.2147;p:0.0056); sedentary habits are also negatively correlated with activity during (r:-0.319;p:<0.0001) and after the virtual day (r:-0.263;p: 0.0002). It is evident that those who perform physical activity during the virtual day, also still doing some physical activity after it (r:0.5553;p:<0.0001) and on the weekend (r:0.4207;p:<0.0001).
CONCLUSIONS: the level of physical activity during confinement shows healthy behavior during periods of the virtual school day with frequencies of participation 3 or more days a week, which is related to the normal BMI range (19 ± 3.15Female;18.7 ± 4.1Male).
