PURPOSE: To determine the accuracy of estimating % body fat when using the Futrex 6100TM (Futrex) and Stayhealthy BC3TM (BC3) compared to Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and hydrostatic weighing (HW).

METHODS: % Body fat was estimated in 126 adults (58 men, 68 women) aged 18–80 years using a near infrared device (Futrex), bioelectrical impedance (BC3) and DEXA, and 38 children (20 boys, 18 girls) aged 10–17 years using the BC3 and HW. Body composition measures were obtained in the following order: adults- Futrex, BC3, DEXA; children- BC3, HW. Paired t-tests were used to assess differences between devices for children, while a repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the differences between devices for adults.

RESULTS: There was no difference between % body fat for children when comparing the BC3 and HW (boys, p > 0.11; girls, p > 0.58). Regression of % body fat by HW on BC3 yielded R of 0.7 (p < 0.01) for girls. Repeated measures ANOVA for women (18–80yrs) showed differences between % body fat for both Futrex and BC3 when compared to DEXA (p < 0.01). Significant difference in % body fat for men (1 8-80yrs) between BC3 and DEXA was observed (p < 0.01); however, Futrex and DEXA did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). Regression of body fat % by DEXA on BC3 yielded R of 0.70 (p < 0.01) and 0.84 (p<0.01), and DEXA on Futrex yielded R of 0.85 (p < 0.01) and 0.74 (p < 0.01) for men and women, respectively.

CONCLUSION: The Stayhealthy BC3TM is a valid device to measure % body fat for children and is moderately correlated to hydrostatic weighing for girls. The Futrex 6100TM is a valid device for estimating % body fat in men and was moderately correlated to the DEXA. Both the Stayhealthy BC3TM and Futrex 6100TM are not valid measures when measuring % body fat in women.
