PURPOSE: To assess the variation of basketball abilities in players with intellectual disability (ID) before (pre) and after (post) a 8-month training in relation to Inclusive (IB) and Not Inclusive basketball (NIB) training; and to analyse the variation of basketball abilities by subjects’ ID levels.

METHODS: Forty-one male basketball players (28.2±4.3 years; 19% mild, 44% moderate, and 37% severe ID) were divided in 21 playing into IB with also 10 athletes without ID, and 20 athletes playing into NIB training. All players were assessed through pre and post basketball test for assessing Global, Level (L1, L2, L3, L4), Ball handling, Passing, Reception, and Shooting ability.

RESULTS: Significant improvements (p<0.01) were showed in Passing (pre 5.43±2.79; post 7.44±2.86), Reception (pre 5.88±3.73; post 7.96±3.52), Shooting (pre 4.90±3.43; post 6.29±3.11), Ball handling (pre 5.54±3.26; post 7.88±3.01), Global (pre 21.79±12.54; post 29.65±11.88), L1 (pre 13.60±4.23; post 15.96±2.48), L2 (pre 7.11±6.82; post 11.33±6.55), and L3 (pre 1.38±3.28; post 2.83±4.74), independently by IB and NIB. Delta (post-pre) scores in Ball handling (NIB 0.83±0.60; IB 4.69±0.58), Reception (NIB 0.46±0.65; IB 5.18±0.63), Passing (NIB 0.49±0.50; IB 4.78±0.48), Shooting (NIB 0.41±0.63; IB 3.22±0.61), Global (NIB 2.28±2.03; IB 14.49±1.96), L1 (NIB 0.65±0.44; IB 3.16±0.43), L2 (NIB 1.13±1.13; IB 6.03±1.10) and L3 (NIB 0.42±1.02, IB 4.31±0.98) showed that the athletes in IB improved significantly more than athletes in NIB (p<0.01). Ball handling (pre R=-0.53; post R=-0.55), Reception (pre R=-0.54; post R=-0.56), Passing (pre R=-0.53; post R=-0.57), Shooting (pre R=-0.47; post R=-0.56), Global (pre R=-0.51; post R=-0.58), L1 (pre R=-0.40; post R=-0.50), L2 (pre R=-0.46; post R=-0.39), and L3 (pre R=-0.62) scores were negatively correlated to ID level (p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS: Athletes with Intellectual disability (ID) who performed Inclusive (IB) or Not Inclusive Basketball (NIB) improved significantly after a 8-month training. However, the athletes training in IB obtained the best scores. Therefore, a IB could be introduced in specific training to reach higher improvements in the ability of players with ID.
