The HDL-C Response to Acute Exercise Depends on Dietary Monounsaturated Fatty-Acid Ratio

Both acute aerobic exercise and diets with high monounsaturated fatty acid to saturated fatty acid ratios (MUFA:SFA) have been linked to beneficial changes in blood lipids; however, the combined effect of these two factors has not been explored.

PURPOSE: To determine if two diets of different MUFA:SFA (Low Diet (LD) = 0.7 and High Diet (HD) =1.1) each combined with acute bouts of aerobic exercise differentially affect HDL-C, HDL2-C and HDL3-C in healthy men.

METHODS: Each subject (N = 14) completed two-five week diets (LD and HD) in a randomly assigned order with a four week washout period between the diets. Two acute aerobic exercise bouts at 70% VO2peak (energy expenditure = 400 kcals) were completed during the last week of each diet. VO2peak was determined by indirect, open-circuit calorimetry during the Bruce treadmill protocol, and body composition measurements were done using DEXA at the beginning of the study. All blood samples were obtained during two timepoints (24 hour pre and 24 hour post-exercise) after a 12 hour fast during the fifth week of each diet. A 2 × 2 repeated measure ANOVA (Diet × Time) was used to analyze the data for HDL-C, HDL2-C, and HDL3-C. A comparisonwise error rate was set at 0.05. Post-exercise lipid concentrations were adjusted for plasma volume changes. The mean group characteristics on entry to study were: Age = 34.7 ± 11.4 yr, Weight = 205 ± 34.9 lb, %Fat=29.2 ± 10.1, and VO2peak = 3.46 ± 0.71 L-min-1. RESULTS in table:

CONCLUSION: Our results show that the HDL-C, HDL2-C, and HDL3-C responses to acute endurance exercise are dependent on the dietary MUFA:SFA ratio in healthy men.
