Abstract 1171

Oxygen status at the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle was determined in vivo using the continuous near-infrared imaging machine. This device is able to measure the deoxygenation (DO) and blood volume (BV) at 4×10cm area of surface muscle and affords the imaging figure. Ten healthy subjects performed the isotonic tiptoe standing for 120 seconds. The longitudinal changes in DO and BV were obtained simultaneously at this muscle. We observed the regional difference of oxygen status in this muscle during contraction and recovery. We picked up two data (optical density) equivalent to that at popliteal origin side (P) and that at achilles tendon side (T). During 2min-contraction the average DO in T side increased to 0.084±0.046, whereas in P side increased to 0.068±0.070. During 3min-recovery these values in T and P sides were −0.102±0.070 and −0.066±0.039, respectively. The averaged BV during 2min-contraction in T side (−0.182±0.158) was significantly lower than in P side (−0.103±0.093). During 3min-recovery these values in T side (0.118±0.074) was significantly higher than in P side (0.0450±0.038). These data demonstrated that oxygen status, especially blood volume change, during contraction and recovery was dissimilar across regions at the medial head of gastrocnemius muscle. These regional differences might be produced by physical limitation of blood flow because of the intramuscular pressure, fascicle length or fascicle angle.
