In Brief:
The annual ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal® worldwide survey of health and fitness professionals is now in its eighth year. For the first time, high-intensity interval training not only appeared in the top 10 trends, but took over the no.1 spot. This year’s survey supports some of the previous trends, reestablished two trends from previous surveys, added one new trend, and supported the elimination of Zumba, spinning, Pilates, balance training, and the stability ball as trends in the health fitness industry. Some trends that appeared in the top 20 last year did not make the list for 2014. For-profit (commercial) and not-for-profit organizations will try to predict the future of the fitness industry continually in an effort to influence the direction of the health fitness market. This survey, investigation, and analysis is much different in that it not only surveyed thousands of certified fitness professionals around the world but also sought out experts to comment on the results.
