In Brief

In response to the growing need for educated talented individuals to manage medically integrated health and fitness centers, the second annual Medical Fitness Institute will be held June 9-12, 2010, at Vanderbilt University. The three-day program sponsored by the Medical Fitness Association focuses on a variety of topics directly related to the operational success of medical fitness centers. Seminars include marketing, recruiting and retention of staff, clinical integration, aspects of the medical fitness difference, facility certification, and strategic planning - all geared to the medical fitness model and medically integrated facilities. Space is limited. Contact [email protected] or call 804-897-5701 for more information.

This annual award named for Robert D. Boone, MBA/MHA, CHE, a former VP with FirstHealth of the Carolinas, is presented to an individual/investigator that has made a significant contribution in defining benchmarks for the medical fitness industry in the area of outcomes measurement, best practices, or clinical research. Boone was instrumental in restructuring and rebuilding the Medical Fitness Association (MFA) from 1998 to 2004. Boone served as chairman of the Board and secretary/treasurer during his tenure. Not only is he a valuable volunteer who gives 110% to MFA, his passion has defined and implemented benchmarks for the industry. This award is dedicated to an individual who goes above and beyond, and provides leadership through example.

Neil Byrd, director of Wellness Services, Rex Healthcare, Raleigh, NC, received the award during the 15th Annual Medical Fitness and Healthcare Conference this past December in Orlando. The Financial Benchmarking Survey for SEHFA (the official MFA Southeast Regional Chapter) developed by Byrd tracks the key causative statistics most likely to drive bottomline results for medically integrated health and fitness centers. Managers can use the results to measure their center's performance against others and make adjustments in operations and budgets to improve performance.

Leading the way for medically integrated fitness centers, MFA sponsors the first facility certification for the health and fitness industry. There is now a mechanism for all health and fitness facilities to benchmark their programs and services against standards and guidelines designed specifically for medically integrated fitness centers.

"Certified medically integrated fitness centers feature the professional expertise and programming necessary to safely and effectively assist all people, regardless of their current health status, to develop, initiate, and maintain an active lifestyle that minimizes risk and promotes health and wellness. The MFA seal of approval assures consumers that the facility has met the highest standards of quality and service and will offer them an appropriate and effective health and wellness experience," says Brad A. Roy, Ph.D., FACSM, FACHE, MFA board chair, and vice president/administrator at Kalispell Regional Medical Center and The Summit in Kalispell, MT.
