  • 1. Cramp Prone? You’re not alone! Exercise-associated muscle cramps (EAMC) affect numerous people during and after physical activity. But the exact cause, and therefore treatment, remains a bit elusive. Find out more about EAMC by reading this issue’s Health & Fitness From A to Z column, written by Kevin C. Miller, Ph.D., AT, ATC, “The Evolution of Exercise-Associated Muscle Cramp Research.”

Golding Student Health/Fitness Scholarship winner during ACSM’s 2018 International Health & Fitness Summit in Arlington, VA. Be sure to read more about Courtney, an exceptional student with a passion for exercise science, and this prestigious award in this issue.
  • Lawrence A. Golding, Ph.D., FACSM, an extraordinary professional, visionary, and exceptional mentor. Dr. Golding passed away on May 14th leaving behind a legacy that will be challenging to match. During his 92 years of life and 60-year teaching career he positively touched the lives of many students and professionals. Dr. Golding was the founding editor-in-chief for ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal® and the driving force behind starting both the Journal and ACSM’s Health & Fitness Summit. Thank you, Dr. Golding, for your visionary leadership, unselfish investment in guiding others, and the legacy challenge you leave behind!
  • 3. Moving Beyond Athletics: Student athletes need a postgraduation wellness vision. On graduation, many student athletes struggle to maintain a physically active lifestyle. In their feature article, “Moving into an Active Future: Supporting Lifetime Physical Activity for Student-Athletes,” Melinda Smith, M.S.; Erin Reifsteck, Ph.D.; and Diane Gill, Ph.D., share how health and fitness professionals can come alongside student athletes and help with the unique physical activity challenges they face.
  • 4. ACSM’s 2018 International Health & Fitness Summit: exhilarating, FUN, and instructional. I hope you had the opportunity to attend the 2018 ACSM International Health & Fitness Summit because it was full of practical information combined with skill and technique instruction. Our pictorial display depicts a sampling of the Summit experience. Start planning now to attend the 2019 International Health & Fitness Summit in Chicago; planning is already underway and the preliminary lineup of sessions looks exceptional!
  • 5. Resistance Training: it is all about technique! This year’s Summit offered two “Do It Right” sessions elegantly taught by Associate Editor Pete Ronai, M.S., FACSM, and Kyle Kercher, M.S. (Summit Medical Fitness Center in Kalispell, MT). Participants learned how to teach a number of lower and upper extremity resistance exercises and how to adapt the exercises for people with musculoskeletal challenges. Pete continues his exceptional instruction with this issue’s Do It Right column focusing on “Bilateral Scapular Retraction and Shoulder External Rotation with Resistance Bands.”
  • 6. Your Client’s Health & Wellness Journey: Many routes, but easy is not always best! Helping people make wise health-related choices is challenging, yet one of our primary roles as fitness professionals. Learn more about how you can support your client’s health-related decision-making by reading “Supporting Healthy Decision-Making,” this issue’s Enhancing Your Behavioral Toolkit column, nicely written by Associate Editor Janet Buckworth, Ph.D., FACSM.
  • 7. ACSM Certifications evolving and improving. A number of important changes have been made to the various ACSM Certifications and associated exams. Yuri Feito, Ph.D., FACSM, shares what these changes are in this issue’s ACSM Certification column.
  • 8. I gave him the perfect program, so why did he stop? As health and fitness professionals, we are experts at designing and implementing exercise programs for individual clients and groups of people. Yet, far too many people discontinue their physical activity efforts before reaping the benefits. This issue’s Clinical Applications column, “Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model,” penned by Kristi M. King, Ph.D., CHES, and Gina B. Gonzalez, Ph.D., CSCS, introduces us to the ecological concept and the fact that physical activity is a health behavior that represents the interaction of a person’s social and physical environment.
