As 2014 draws to a close, it gives me great pleasure to draw your attention to our annual health and fitness trends survey by Walter R. Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM, entitled “Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2015: What’s Driving the Market.” Each year, this survey strives to predict the future of the fitness industry in an effort to inform and guide those individuals working in the field. Now in its ninth year, the survey also conveys the opinion of fitness experts asked to react to the results of the survey.

Consistent with year-end activities, the second feature article entitled “Fitness on the Fly: Healthy Air Travel” by Christopher G. Berger, Ph.D., ACSM-HFS, does much to help readers provide their clients with strategies to make air travel less stressful and more healthy during the busy holiday season. Many U.S. airports provide walking paths and other opportunities to help maintain fitness while traveling, and these are reviewed in the article by Dr. Berger.

Finally, it’s not too soon to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions for 2015 and, to that end, three experts on resistance training tackle the topic of “Resistance Training and Metabolic Syndrome: Muscles Do Matter.” Authored by Paul Sorace, M.S., FACSM, RCEP; Peter Ronai, M.S., RCEP, FACSM; and James R. Churilla, Ph.D., M.P.H., M.S., RCEP, FACSM, this article addresses the cardiovascular risk associated with metabolic syndrome and describes how resistance training can help prevent and manage the disorder — good information to help your clients and members with their New Year’s resolution.

I would like to draw your attention to the excellent writings from our regular department and column authors. These are highlighted in the accompanying box. Each of these articles addresses a specific topic meant to advance your knowledge in the areas of fitness, nutrition, health promotion, and disease prevention.
