DEPARTMENTS: From the Editor
Working in the health and fitness industry as we do, we are the recipients of a seemingly unrelenting stream of advertisements describing diets, gimmicks, and fads that claim improved health and well-being. Yet, how often do we tell our clients, “if something seems to be too good to be true, then it is likely just that… too good to be true.”
I believe strongly that those of us who work in health-related fields are tasked with translating correctly performed research in a manner that practically aids our patients and clients with effectively losing weight and becoming more fit. To that end, for decades now, the American College of Sports Medicine, through the certifications it offers and its various other programs, has helped accomplish just this task. In fact, the translation of the science for the health and fitness professional is one of the reasons that ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal® exists.
In this issue, I am again pleased to share the annual Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2014, authored by Walter R. Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM. Each year, this survey helps set the tone for what we are to expect in the field of fitness for the next 12 months. Joining Dr. Thompson’s article are two other excellent features, both of which are aimed at again translating the sometimes difficult to understand science into practical steps for the grass roots practitioner. The second feature in this issue addresses a topic that is gathering increased attention in the health and fitness field — “The Hydration Equation: Update on Water Balance and Cognitive Performance” by Shaun K. Riebl, M.S., R.D., and Brenda M. Davy, Ph.D., R.D., FACSM. This is followed by an excellent article by Corinna Serviente and Gary A. Sforzo, Ph.D., FACSM, titled, “A Simple Yet Complicated Tool: Measuring Waist Circumference to Determine Cardiometabolic Risk.”
I trust that these articles, and those from our regular columnists highlighted in the accompanying feature box, go a long way toward helping you sort out fact from fiction.
