EFFECTS OF ACUTE AND CHRONIC EXERCISE ON BLOOD PRESSURE
A study published in the September 2012 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®, the official journal of the American College of Sports Medicine, examined high blood pressure response to acute and chronic exercise.
A total of 17 males and females (aged 45 to 60 years) with blood pressure readings indicating prehypertension (i.e., systolic blood pressure, 120 to 139 mmHg; diastolic blood pressure, 80 to 89 mmHg) participated in this study. In each subject, resting blood pressure and other study variables were measured before and after a 30-minute bout of acute exercise performed at 65% maximum oxygen consumption. The same assessments were repeated after a matched bout of acute exercise was performed after subjects completed an 8-week exercise program (i.e., walking-jogging program four times per week, 30 minutes per session, 65% maximum oxygen consumption).
This study showed that systolic and diastolic blood pressure values measured at rest after the chronic training regimen were both significantly reduced when compared with resting values obtained before the acute exercise session completed before training. The magnitude of change in systolic blood pressure measured after acute exercise and before 8 weeks of exercise training was strongly correlated with the magnitude of the change in resting systolic blood pressure after chronic training. The study showed a similar correlation with diastolic blood pressure. The authors concluded that, in people with prehypertension, the magnitude of the blood pressure-lowering effect following an acute bout of exercise may predict the extent of blood pressure lowering after chronic training interventions.
