Weightlifting Training Gives Lifelong Benefits

Mark E. Lavallee, M.D., CSCS, FACSM, has been the chairman of USA Weightlifting’s Sports Medicine Society since 2007 and director of the International Weightlifting Federation’s World Masters Championships since 1999. He has served on the board of American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and currently practices in South Bend, Indiana, where he is the codirector of the South Bend-Notre Dame Sports Medicine Fellowship program. Dr. Lavallee covers numerous high school and college sports in South Bend.

Linda A. Mansfield, M.D., is the head team physician for Washington High School and Indiana University South Bend Volleyball team. She shares coverage with men’s and women’s basketball with Dr. Lavallee. She is associate director at the Memorial Family Medicine Residency program. Dr. Mansfield carefully splits her time between teaching in the residency and caring for her sports medicine patients. Domestically, she provided care for athletes at USA Weightlifting National Championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 2011 and was medical director of the International Weightlifting Federation’s Master’s Championships in Lismal, Cyprus, in 2011.
