FUEL PROPERLY: Nutrition Intervention and Race Preparation

LEARNING OBJECTIVE This article will provide a thorough, yet general, nutritional workup of and guidelines for a novice runner in preparation for a half marathon. The neo-runner will be led through three stages of nutritional strategies, which include 1) weight loss and improving general nutrition, 2) periodized eating and fueling, and 3) race preparation and recovery.

This article shows the nutritional preparation of a neo-runner in anticipation of the first half marathon. The plan includes weight loss, improving general nutrition, periodized eating and fueling, and finally race preparation.

Nanna L. Meyer, Ph.D., R.D., CSSD, FACSM, is an associate professor at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Her research interest is bone health in athletes. She also is a senior sport dietitian at the U.S. Olympic Committee. There she conducts applied research that refines the efficacy of sport nutrition services for athletes. Dr. Meyer is a working group member of the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission related to nutrition and sport. Finally, she also promotes food literacy using creative educational approaches, which her graduate students deliver to the local community.
