Chromium and calcium are two minerals that have been extensively researched over the years, most recently for their impact on body weight. This article discusses the research on chromium and calcium and identifies practical, healthy ways that individuals can lose weight.

Stella Lucia Volpe, Ph.D., R.D., L.D.N., FACSM, began her career as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California at Berkeley, then as a faculty member from 1994 to 2003 at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Volpe joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in January 2004. Dr. Volpe is the Miriam Stirl Term Endowed chair in Nutrition. She also is assistant director for Integrative Research of the Institute for Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism in the School of Medicine. Dr. Volpe is a faculty member of the Physiology of the Body Compartment Fellowship Program in the Department of Neuroscience, Human Nutrition, and Food at the Universita Degli Studi "Tor Vergata," Roma, Italia. The focus of her research is in obesity prevention and in mineral metabolism in chronic disease and exercise.

Jonah Soolman, B.S., graduated with a dual degree in Mathematics and English from Tufts University in 1999 and subsequently worked for the United States Department of Transportation as an operations research analyst. Mr. Soolman has since changed careers and is currently pursuing a second bachelor's degree in human nutrition at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
