Mission Statement
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) advances and integrates scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine.

History of ACSM
The American College of Sports Medicine was founded in 1954 by a group of 11 physicians. Over the years, the College has grown in size and scope, created a National Center, expanded that National Center, added staff and services and today stands proudly with more than 50,000 national, international, and regional members in almost 80 countries around the world. ACSM is the largest, most respected sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world.

ACSM was founded by individuals representing disparate fields and has continued to be a model organization attracting and retaining professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines. The programs, educational conferences, certification and training programs, and publications and resources offered by the College strive to meet the educational and professional needs of all members.

Meetings and Conferences
The Education Department develops programs for professionals involved in sports medicine and exercise science. This department also is responsible for scientific abstract and clinical case paper submissions for the Annual Meeting; collecting programming suggestions for the Annual Meeting, ACSM Team Physician (SM) Course and ACSM Advanced Team Physician Course content; Continuing Education Credits (CECs), Continuing Medical Education Credits (CMEs), honors and awards, and student affairs.

Continuing Education
We endorse more than 180 conferences a year that extend CEC and CME credit to individuals seeking continuing education and continuing medical education credit hours. Since many organizations, including ACSM, are now requiring CECs for continuing certification and maintenance of credentials, ACSM is pleased to offer a wide selection of programs for individuals across the world. Members may retrieve calendar items from many sources: ACSM’s Sports Medicine Bulletin, ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal®, and ACSM's Certified News.
