We appreciate Dr. Petersen’s letter regarding our article “Setting Mastery Learning Standards.”1 We agree that intrinsic factors such as motivation, self-determination, and grit greatly influence both achievement and the rapidity of achieving standards. Thoughtful standard setting in the mastery learning model will help to ensure that those who lack the motivation to achieve acceptable levels of performance will be identified earlier in the learning process to foster either increased motivation or redirection into other areas of study that are better aligned with their personal goals.
