SOGHIN is a body of health professionals in Nigeria with a common interest in the advancement of research, care, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary systems. Members of SOGHIN can be found in virtually all tertiary health institutions across Nigeria. For effective realization of the objectives of the society, sub-groups of specialists like physicians, surgeons, pathologists, interventional radiologists, and nurses have emerged. During annual scientific meetings of the society, these sub-groups organize parallel sessions.

SOGHIN is a member of World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO). An endoscopy training center was established by WGO in Lagos, Nigeria. The center is run by SOGHIN in conjunction with Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). SOGHIN also has collaborations and working relationships with African Network for Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases, South African Gastroenterology Foundation (SAGF), American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).
