Editorial Fellowship Application Process
The application window for the 2022 – 2024 Editorial Fellowship period is now closed. The window for 2023 – 2025 Editorial Fellows will open in the spring of 2023.
Who: Early career scientists or junior faculty (typically within five years of completing training) or senior trainees close to making the transition to an independent position. Applicants should have a strong interest in a research career. Direct experience in research with one or more peer reviewed publications is required.
Applicants with interest in either basic (physiology, pharmacology, or pathophysiology) or clinical research (observational research and clinical trials) are encouraged to apply. Applicants with interest and expertise in bioinformatics, data visualization, systems biology and innovative techniques are also encouraged to apply.
Editorial Fellows will work closely with one of the Associate Editors or Deputy Editors and will be mentored by that Editor. Appointments will be for one year, potentially renewable.
What: Editorial Fellows participate in all JASN editorial processes, including the editorial review of manuscripts, the development of editorial policy and the identification of topics for invited manuscripts.
Fellows will participate in the editorial assessment of manuscripts through assignments (from the mentoring Editor or another Associate Editors that can benefit from their expertise), followed by careful reading of assigned manuscripts, in selection of reviewers, and in assessment of reviews. They will discuss reviews of each paper with the Editor, a dialog leading to development of a final recommendation. Decision making authority will remain with the Editors.
Fellows will participate in weekly Editorial calls, will have access to the JASN manuscript system to all discussed manuscripts, and will be encouraged to contribute, as appropriate, to discussion of manuscripts they have assessed. Frequent 'fellow only' meetings with JASN senior leadership will also be held to discuss specific topics in the editorial process.
When: Applications are due by April 30, 2022. The fellowship will commence on July 1, 2022.
Steps: Interested applicants are invited to provide the following:
- A short bio (NIH biosketch or similar format)
- A brief description of your research interests, publication experience and reasons for your interest in the JASN Fellowship program (500 words maximum)
- Please provide the name of one or more Associate Editor and/or Deputy Editors with whom you would like to work. Your selection of a potential mentor should be based on shared scientific interests.
