Hainan Medical University (HMU) was established in 1993 and offers degrees in medicine to both domestic and oversea students. It has established international cooperation with the University of Utah (USA), Newcastle University (UK), Queensland University of Technology (Australia) and Chonnam National University (Korea) in undergraduate exchange, graduate and doctoral training.

Focusing on the establishment of disciplines such as reproductive medicine, tropical medicine, emergency trauma and disaster medicine, ethnic Li medicine, health services and management, HMU has sponsored 5 journals: Asian Pacific Journal of Reproduction, Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine, Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine, Journal of Acute Disease, and Journal of Hainan Medical University (Chinese version). Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine and Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine have been included by SCI and Journal of Acute Disease has been included by ESCI
