PEDIATRIC CARE

ADOLESCENT CONTRACEPTION: Sorting out the facts

Holcomb, Meagan A.; Williams, Richard; Skipper, Michelle Taylor

Nurse Practitioner . 34(9):18-26, September 2009.

Adolescent contraception is a complex issue for NPs. Because sexual activity often precedes the ability to make responsible sexual decisions, clinicians are encouraged to provide anticipatory guidance to adolescent patients and their families concerning sexual behavior and appropriate contraception methods.

INFLAMMATORY DISEASE

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Alleviating the pain of arthralgias

Danter, Joyce H.

Nurse Practitioner . 34(9):40-46, September 2009.

There are over 100 types of arthralgias. NPs should know how to differentiate between the most common, OA and RA, and be prepared to diagnosis and treat each condition. Understanding traditional and non-traditional therapy options is an important part of management.

BACTERIAL INFECTIONS

Biofilms: A new enemy

Snyder, Kelly N.; Compliment, James M.; Buchinsky, Farrel J.; More

Nurse Practitioner . 34(9):35-39, September 2009.

Biofilms are communities of bacteria that behave differently from free-floating bacteria. Biofilms have been implicated as the cause of persistent otolaryngologic infections. Biofilms are highly resistant to antibiotic therapy and difficult to culture, making management of chronic infections challenging. Understanding biofilms could help improve treatment and prevention of chronic infections.

MEN'S HEALTH

Testosterone replacement therapy: What to look for, when to treat

Cawley, Michelle Ann

Nurse Practitioner . 34(9):47-52, September 2009.

Low testosterone levels affect a significant portion of the male population, but only a fraction receive treatment. It is important for NPs to understand androgen deficiency syndromes, the specific signs and symptoms of low serum testosterone, and the risks, benefits and monitoring factors when using replacement therapy options.
