Hemochromatosis: Pumping too much iron

Hemochromatosis is a condition of abnormal iron metabolism that permits absorption of too much iron into the body's tissues. This iron overload can progress to organ failure and death if left untreated. However, if the diagnosis is caught early (prior to liver cirrhosis), the survival rate is favorable.

In Maine, there are many rural, medically underserved areas where low population density and long travel distances may act as barriers to preventive healthcare. One screening program, administered by an NP, was designed to target these residents with a hypertension and diabetes screening service.
