Operative technique for PCA total hip replacement

Hedley, Anthony K. MD

Collapse Box

Abstract

The operative technique for insertion of the PCA total hip replacement components is discussed. Both theoretical and technical points are emphasized. Routine placement of these components is discussed and illustrated. Particular attention is given to the details of component positioning and selection.

The importance of preoperative templating and its relevance to final component selection and positioning intraoperatively are outlined. The finer points of operative technique, with the caveats derived from knowledge gained in the author's first three years of experience with these components is outlined.

It has become increasingly obvious that success with noncemented joint replacements is extremely technique-dependent. It is the author's intention to outline important aspects of both preoperative planning and intraoperative technique in order to provide the operating surgeon with the necessary background and techniques to successfully implant the prosthesis
