Abstract: A new point-of-care hematology system has recently been introduced by HemoCue. Whole blood is sampled directly from a fingerstick sample or venous blood tube into a microcuvette. The measurement starts automatically when the microcuvette is inserted into the analyzer. The novel system uses state-of-the-art imaging technology to count the white blood cells (WBCs) and perform a 5-part differentiation. The cells are classified into neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils, pathological WBCs (blasts and immature granulocytes), and others.
The HemoCue WBC DIFF gave excellent correlation to 3 different cell counters with a correlation coefficient (r) between 0.94 and 0.997 for total WBCs, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. Only a very small bias (<0.24 × 109/L) could be observed on those cell types. A point-of-care WBC count including a 5-part differential will increase the availability at the point-of-care of already well-established and frequently used laboratory tests. Rapid and easy access will assist physicians in making direct and more evidence-based decisions in a number of clinical conditions.
