Abstract

Endocrinologists and cardiologists are debating the definition and validity of metabolic syndrome, although all agree that treatment begins with diet, weight reduction, exercise, and other lifestyle interventions to reduce risk factors. This article reviews the definitions, clinical management, and treatment strategies for metabolic syndrome and some of the controversy involved and provides practical advice for those with risk factors or for those who already have been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome.
