These days, most people have a smart phone, tablet, or other mobile electronic device. Tell patients about the following free-for-download apps to help them take charge of their health.∗
This app, created by two ED physicians, has an extensive database of medications, diseases, medical facility locations, physicians, and more. Patients can search the app archive for any symptoms they may be experiencing. If they want to see a healthcare provider, iTriage displays the nearest medical facilities, and even shows the wait time at each place.
Created by Quest Diagnostics, Gazelle is a health app that delivers lab results directly to a patient's mobile device. The purpose of the lab test, plus normal and abnormal lab values for each test, are explained when the patient receives his or her results. Patients can also use the app to schedule lab appointments, set medication reminders, organize health information, and monitor body mass index and weight.
Blood Pressure Monitor—Family Lite
A comprehensive BP tracking app, Blood Pressure Monitor—Family Lite correlates BP with medications, right and left arm readings, and meals (for BP and glucose tracking). Data files are easily exported into e-mails that are ready to send to primary care providers for updates.
