ABSTRACT: MANAGING SPECIAL POPULATIONS REQUIRES MEETING A HIGHER LEVEL OF DEMANDS AND A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THOSE AFFLICTED BY CHRONIC OR TEMPORARY HEALTH CONDITIONS. THIS ARTICLE AIMS TO PRESENT CURRENT EVIDENCE ON THE USE OF β-HYDROXY-β-METHYLBUTYRATE (HMB) SUPPLEMENTATION IN SEVERAL SPECIAL POPULATIONS. EVIDENCE HAS SHOWN THAT HMB SUPPLEMENTATION TENDS TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS, AND A STRONG BODY OF EVIDENCE HAS SHOWN TO IMPROVE FITNESS-RELATED COMPONENTS IN THOSE WITH SPECIFIC CHRONIC DISEASES. AMONG THOSE BENEFITTING FROM SUCH SUPPLEMENTATION ARE INDIVIDUALS WITH CANCER, HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS, OR OTHER CATABOLIC CONDITIONS.
