ABSTRACT: ALTHOUGH MANY COACHES HAVE COME TO ACCEPT THE ROLE OF THE SNATCH AND CLEAN & JERK (WEIGHTLIFTING) IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF POWER AND STRENGTH, LESS APPRECIATION HAS BEEN GENERATED FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF OTHER ATHLETIC CHARACTERISTICS. THIS ARTICLE PROVIDES SUPPORTING EVIDENCE FROM THE LITERATURE AND FROM THE AUTHOR’S EXPERIENCE. THE AUTHOR’S EXPERIENCE IN IMPLEMENTING THE LIFTS TO ENHANCE OVERALL ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE OVER A LONG TERM HAS LED TO A STANDARDIZED APPROACH TO THE COACHING STRATEGY INVOLVED. THIS GENERALIZED APPROACH IS INITIATED WITH DIAGNOSTIC PRACTICES, REMEDIATION, AND TECHNICAL TRAINING THAT WILL PROVIDE THE ATHLETE WITH THE PATHWAY TO DEVELOP MORE FULLY THE CHARACTERISTICS OF HIS OR HER ATHLETIC POTENTIAL.
