Editor's Note: During Soviet study tour in the summer of 1987, American strength coaches and athletes met and exchanged ideas with Soviet and East German strengh and conditioning specialists. Among the topics discussed were sport-specific training strategies, general strength and conditioning programs, physiological factors involved in training, and physiological aspects of athletic training. In an effort to share the information gathered on this tour with all strength coaches and atheltes, an article will appear in each NSCA Journal that will summarize one of the topics. These articles will be part of a series entitiled the "Soviet Lecture Series."
