This article examines the findings and recommendations of the Finance and Incentives Work Group related to financing and providing incentives for a voluntary national public health accreditation program. With such accreditation program in place that focus on quality and performance improvement, health departments will be collectively able to demonstrate measurable results based upon consensus standards.

This commentary asserts that quality improvement (QI) and performance management are essential roles for all public health departments. To achieve the goal of spreading QI activities through voluntary accreditation and other initiatives, national, state, and local leaders have a responsibility to create QI-friendly policies, funding, incentives, leadership, and systems.
