Introduction: Aim:To describe the patterns of bowel involvement in IBD children and adolescents because there are no reports about these findings in Brazil.
Methods: Crohn’s Disease(CD),Ulcerative Colitis(UC) and Indeterminate Colitis(IC) were diagnosed based on strict criteria. IC was termed when evidences could not fulfill the criteria for CD or UC. Only small; only large and small and large-bowel disease were the patterns of bowel involvement described.
Results: 80 subjects, 33 female and 47 male, 30 CD, 40 UC and 10 IC were included. Median age at entry was 7yrs6m±4yrs5m (11m-17yrs).
Conclusion: 1.Small-bowel only involvement was not observed;2.In UC, the predominant pattern was large bowel-only(pancolon or left-side colon associated with rectum and sigmoid involvement);3.In CD, large bowel-only involvement was as frequent as large-small bowel(pancolon or right-side colon associated with ileum or cecum);4.Rectum and sigmoid involvements, were found in CD almost as frequently as in UC;5.No characteristic patterns of bowel involvement was possible to be defined in IC.
