ABSTRACT A nursing student records a brief biography of a Zambian nurse and certified midwife living with HIV/AIDS while shadowing the nurse during an undergraduate cross-cultural course in Macha, Zambia in January 2009. The nurse strives to live positively, educating, encouraging, and empowering others.

A nurse midwife in Zambia challenges this student to rethink how she views adversity.

Sarah J. Garraty intends to graduate from Messiah College with a BSN in May 2011. Sarah thanks her instructor and advisor, Mrs. Wanda Thuma-McDermond, for her guidance with this project.

Acknowledgment: JCN thanks Grace Tazelaar, MS, RN, Nurses Christian Fellowship Missions Director and former missionary to Africa, for her consultation and HIV/AIDS expertise used in preparing this article.
