    Current text:

For example, 1 author found that of 298 individuals who were admitted to a psychiatric facility in Appalachia for opioid dependence, 187 (63%) had problems related to OxyContin that was prescribed to them for pain.10

[Where this reference #10 relates to: Ives TJ, Chelminski PR, Hammett-Stabler CA, et al. Predictors of opioid misuse in patients with chronic pain: a prospective cohort study. BMC Health Serv Res. 2006;6:46.]

The sentence that was used actually is a reference to: Hays LR. A profile of OxyContin Addiction. J Addict Dis. 2004;23(4):1–9.

However, to be completely accurate the sentence should read, “For example, 1 author found that of 298 individuals who were admitted to a psychiatric facility in Appalachia for opioid dependence, 187 (63%) had problems related to OxyContin and of those, 50 (27%) maintained that it was prescribed to them for pain.”

Back to Top | Article Outline
    The text should read:

For example, the authors of a prospective cohort study of 196 opioid-treated patients with chronic non-cancer pain found that 62 (32%) of these patients “committed opioid misuse.”10

[Thus this revised sentence would correctly cite this reference #10 of: Ives TJ, Chelminski PR, Hammett-Stabler CA, et al. Predictors of opioid misuse in patients with chronic pain: a prospective cohort study. BMC Health Serv Res. 2006;6:46.]
