Information for Authors
Heart Insight is a quarterly patient education publication co-published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and the American Heart Association (AHA), with a circulation of about 500,000. Our readers are patients who have cardiovascular disease or related conditions, as well as their families and caregivers.
The editorial focus is primarily on (1) tips on managing, or reducing the risk of developing, cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke and other heart-related disorders; (2) practical — not preachy — advice on heart-healthy lifestyle changes and realistic goals against which to measure progress; and (3) supplying information relating to managing or preventing cardiovascular disease that is consistent with the most current AHA treatment guidelines and Scientific Statements.
Articles average 1,200 to 1,800 words, but could range from 850 words to 2,400 words, depending on the complexity of the topic and the amount of research required. Payment is $0.75 per word, with the final word count calculated after the AHA’s scientific review process. We expect to pay for and use all assigned articles. In rare situations where we consider an article to be unsalvageable because the writing is stylistically substandard or medically inaccurate, the research is deficient or the focus didn't adhere to the agreed-upon topic assignment, we pay a kill fee of 25% of the previously agreed-upon fee for the article.
