Fistulas plug: a new surgical technique to aid closure of chronic oroantral fistula

Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of using fistulas tract as a tissue.

Materials and methods: Twelve adult patients suffering from chronic OAF were included in the study. New technique using the chronic fistulas tract as a plug to close the oroantral fistula.

Results: The surgical procedure was well tolerated by all patients. With excellent closure of the oroantral fistula, no intraoperative or postoperative complications were noted.

Conclusion: The present study offers the use of fistulas tract itself to act as a tissue plug of antral floor defect, using buccal or palatal flap on top of it; hence, double-layer closure could be easily achieved.
