Abstract

Summary: Neurologic and psychiatric disorders may be associated with pathologic forms of laughter and crying. This article reviews the structures involved in normal laughter and crying together with information about the anatomy and physiology of neurologic diseases that produce pathologic laughter and crying. A comprehensive classification system for these disorders is proposed and treatment trials are reviewed.
