March Issue and Journal Club

The March issue of Annals of Surgery contains three feature articles with accompanying editorials, two randomized controlled trials, two meta-analyses, a surgical technique article, a surgical retrospection article, and an additional 19 original articles.

The feature article that will be of interest to all surgeons is "Use of advanced directives for high-risk operations: A national survey of surgeons" by Redmann, et al. The findings of this national survey are quite stunning and are put into perspective by the accompanying editorial titled "Putting the patient first: Honoring advanced directives prior to surgery" by Cooper, et al.

The expert moderator for the March Journal Club is Dr. James W. Fleshman, Jr., professor of surgery and chief of the Section of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The featured article is "Intraperitoneal Local Anesthetic Improves Recovery after Colon Resection: A Double-Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial" by Arman Kahokehr and co-authors from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. This article can be accessed for free for all who wish to participate in the Journal Club.

Under the collections tab, a new collection of breast cancer articles published in the Annals of Surgery from 2008 to the present is now available. The articles are listed by the  number of citations received.
