July 2014 Issue and Journal Club
The July 2014 issue of Annals includes 2 perspectives, a column first introduced last month, 2 featured articles with accompanying editorials, 2 randomized controlled trials, 1 meta-analysis, 1 review article and 18 additional original articles. The first perspective deals with the issue of fair pay for surgical house staff and the second addresses the need for appropriate incentives in the private sector to enhance quality of care. One of the features analyzes trauma deaths in the United States. They are now the leading cause of death for the segment of our population 46 years and younger and trauma death rates for those older than 25 have substantially increased since 2000 while mortality from cancer and cardiovascular disease has decreased.

Dr. Nicolas Vauthey is the expert moderator for July's Journal Club. The featured article is: Phase II Trial of Hepatic Artery Infusional and Systemic Chemotherapy for Patients With Unresectable Hepatic Metastases From Colorectal Cancer: Conversion to Resection and Long-term Outcomes. D’angelica MI, Correa-Gallego C, Paty PB, et al. Ann Surg. 2014 Mar 21. [Epub ahead of print]. It can be accessed for free by anyone wishing to participate in the journal club.
