January promises to be an exciting month for the Annals of Surgery. During the first week of the month, we will initiate the Annals of Surgery Journal Club. The moderator will be Dr. Herb Chen from the University of Wisconsin and the featured article will be "The superiority of minimally invasive parathyroidectomy based on 1650 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism." This article that was published in the March, 2011 issue of Annals of Surgery will be made available to all who wish to participate in the Journal Club. Appearing with the article will be Dr. Chen's brief summary and four questions for the participants in the Journal Club to ponder. As the month goes on, Dr. Chen will respond to comments and questions posted on the Annals of Surgery website. We welcome all who wish to participate in this new venture.
Under the Collections tab, the 10 most cited articles in the Annals of Surgery from 2008, 2009, and 2010 are available in separate collections. Additionally, extensive collections regarding pancreatic cancer and bariatric surgery with articles from 2006 through 2011 listed in order of how frequently they were cited are also now available.
The January issue of Annals of Surgery is now available on the website. Highlights include a feature and an accompanying editorial regarding hospital quality and the cost of inpatient surgery in the United States, a randomized trial of adjuvant chemotherapy after curative resection of hepatocellular carcinoma, and a meta--analysis regarding core needle biopsy for breast cancer.
Finally, for those who have not yet seen it, a slideshow presentation of the history and present status of the Annals of Surgery by emeritus editor-in-chief Layton Rikkers is also available.
