September Issue and Journal Club
The September issue is the first of two issues devoted to the papers presented at the 133rd meeting of the American Surgical Association held in April in Indianapolis. The ASA papers are often some of the most highly cited papers published in the Annals of Surgery. This month's issue is headed by Dr. L.D. Britt's excellent presidential address regarding the assassination of President Garfield and the founding of the American Surgical Association. It is followed by 15 original studies including one randomized controlled trial and surgical subjects ranging from the perceived deficiencies in surgery residency training to improved outcome in repair of bile duct injuries.

The September Journal Club's featured article will be Cardiorespiratory Fitness Predicts Mortality and Hospital Length of Stay After Major Elective Surgery in Older People by Snowden, Chris P.; Prentis, James; Jacques, Byron; Anderson, Helen; Manas, Derek; Jones, Dave; Trenell, Michael. Annals of Surgery. 257(6):999-1004, June 2013. The expert moderator is Dr. Mark Katlic who is Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief of Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. It can be accessed for free by anyone who wishes to participate in the journal club.
