July Issue and Journal Club
The July, 2013 issue of Annals of Surgery includes 2 feature articles with accompanying editorials, 5 randomized controlled trials, a meta-analysis, and 15 additional original articles. Both features deal with postoperative complications. The first presents a novel comprehensive complication index for quantifying postoperative morbidity and the second relates postoperative complications to the frequency of readmission.
The moderator for the July, 2013 Annals Journal Club is Dr. John Birkmeyer who is the George D. Zuidema Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan and one of this country's experts in outcomes research. The featured article is Hospital Procedure Volume Should Not Be Used as a Measure of Surgical Quality by Damien LaPar and co-authors. It was presented at the 2012 meeting of the American Surgical Association and appeared in the October, 2012 issue of Annals of Surgery. It can be accessed for free by anyone who wishes to participate in the journal club.
