Position statement issued by scientists on the heels of human genome editing study. A recent study published in the August 24 Nature described the successful repair in a human embryo of a gene mutation that causes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, raising concerns about the use of such technology in other cases to create “designer babies.” With the advent of technologies that can be used to edit human genes, the American Society of Human Genetics Workgroup on Human Germline Genome Editing—a consortium of international genetics organizations—has released a position statement to highlight related ethical and other issues. The group has taken a stand against the implantation of gene-edited embryos resulting in pregnancy. The position statement can be read at http://bit.ly/2w8b57S.
