Making the best of electronic health records. With the use of electronic health records growing at a furious pace, assessing and optimizing their effectiveness becomes a national priority, and health information technology becomes an increasingly important part of U.S. health care. New Safety Assurance Factors for EHR Resilience (SAFER) Guides from HealthIT.gov provide self-assessment checklists; practice worksheets; and recommended practices for crucial areas, including patient identification, organizational responsibilities, and contingency planning. Each entry has a corresponding worksheet to aid improvement. Each guide can be downloaded as a PDF and has a link to an interactive Web-based tool at www.HealthIT.gov/saferguide.
