AJN, American Journal of Nursing:
It's great to see positive deviance receiving more attention in nursing literature and practice in the article by Jodie C. Gary, PhD, RN, “Exploring the Concept and Use of Positive Deviance in Nursing” (August).
I had the privilege of working with Jerry Sternin—who is mentioned in Gary's article—during the introduction of the positive deviance process in health care and have since supported quite a number of positive deviance and complexity science–informed improvement efforts focusing on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus prevention in hospitals, bloodstream infections in patients at dialysis centers, case management in health insurance companies, palliative care, and pain management.
